Brunelleschi - Spedale degli Innocenti - Florence

Small bracket history for you to (re) discover the incredible talent Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446), Florentine architect, engineer and so on, among other inventor of perspective. As it is quite difficult to speak without being Quattrocento slightly boring today, I will devote myself here to mention a visit not to be missed if you go to Florence: Hospital of the Innocents.
I invite you to visit the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata, one of the most elegant of Florence. You'll find another the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, the Loggia dei Servi di Maria, the Palazzo Budini-Gattai, the statue of Ferdinand I de 'Medici ... but above the portico of hospital of the innocents, who set the tone for the whole square. This is the first time that Brunelleschi enforces rules of perspective.
Designed to give the impression of depth of field, he gives us here a rare example of a modern public square. This sequence of spaces cube, rhythmic and orderly, stimulated by a system of arc enriched the urban perspective. This particular relationship to public space is also probably its origin in the Roman Forum, and marks a turning point with Gothic architecture. Thus was born the place of rebirth, is unitary and planned, many of which planner should still follow. Finally, simple ceramic medallions depicting children swaddled, only elements of ornamentation, reminiscent of the use of the building.
Continue the tour by entering the building. You'll find a succession of lavish patios, it would be a shame to miss. Clean lines and simplicity make this timeless place ideal for an isolated moment in the cradle of the Quattrocento.

Pavilion of Portugal - Alvaro Siza Vieira Franco

Also at Lisbon, in the Park of Nations, here is one of the few buildings that I think deserves the trip: Portuguese Pavilion by Alvaro Siza Vieira, designed in collaboration with Souto de Moura, another great architect Portistas tripeiros or if you prefer. Developed at the Universal Exhibition of 1998, it hosted the Portuguese national representation.
But what these planets that are large fairs exhibitions universal? You tell me to create new districts, new infrastructure and economic development of a country ... True, but this marketing status, this quest for excess product territories far removed from urban imperatives, it seems ...
I must say that the poverty of the neighborhood park Nations in Lisbon with a lot of obsolete architectures leads me to think that this is a huge hoax ... Despite the remarkable speeches of Siza of Carrilho Graca or Calatrava, this area is destined to become an amusement park ghost. Nationalism, universalism and Development economic service and lack of urban blight. Bravo guys.

I will therefore ignore the context, once again, to talk about this sublime work of Siza. As you can see in the picture below, it is a huge concrete wall, about twenty centimeters in thickness by about fifty feet long, almost unreal. Floating above a huge vacuum, suspended by powerful buttresses of screw steel, it seems that gravity will be frozen for a moment. Technical prowess in the service of a simple, elegant and symbolic, Siza offers us a great lesson in poetry. In a neighborhood plagued by counterfeit coarse architecture, which attempts to jostle the cantilever and other megastructures, Siza remains the only clear, namely dialogue with the sky, the sea and horizon. Far more subtle than the posturing surrounding Siza develops in an orderly continuity architecture and learned where the white stone Lisbon finds its expression.

The Cecla - Against Architecture

I wanted to share with you my heart to blow the last Franco La Cecla pamphlet, "Against Architecture". I had the idea to write a little brocade over cynicism fashionable in architecture today, but after reading this book, I could not do that you share. He does not preach, he complains!
architect by training, the consultant was Cecla Renzo Piano and now teaches anthropology worship in Milan and Barcelona, after teaching at the Faculty Venice Architecture. He also founded ASIA, an agency responsible for assessing the social impact of works architectures. He never practiced as an architect. His first chapter is entitled, "Why I am not become an architect." This book tells his discomfort with a profession in decline.
Very virulent against the spirit in which the work leading architects, he protests, through a multitude of examples of architecture-cons show a loss of meaning, often cynical, whose sole prerogative lies in the formal sector.
I must say I was deeply seduced by the look he shall include Rem Koolhaas. This affirms he not justify his work that shopping is the only space for citizens and their only way of democratic participation? In fact, hearing it from a superstar architect who built the four corners of the planet, me, it bothers me! I still love it passes over the smoky exhibition "Mutations" and its aesthetic exploitation of the world's misery. Citing the need to rethink the city, while denouncing the incompetence and cynicism of "archistars" who hide behind their aesthetic ambitions The Cecla offers us a salutary counterpoint.
Again quoting Mies van der Rohe, while seeking good fortune, when asked if artists had not always worked for the powerful? He rejects outright the alibi of the modest craftsman-architect meeting the responsibilities which are his own, in the development of cities today. We are witnessing a true urban marketing, where it only produces packaging; Debord once called it "the look", condemning his time already, this derives from the art. Everyone takes for his rank. New example, sees his Quai Branly called "Triumph of shopping on the history of civilizations," of happiness. In short, a refreshing read. And finish by questioning those who should care for the city as a public good ...

Little thought for all those who feed architecture show.

Auto-bin das Portas do Floor - Social Housing Area Mateus

Huge blow of heart for a recent work of the brothers Mateus in Lisbon, always on the same hill, in the district of Castelo. Overlooking the old Alfama district, this park and its panoramic terrace offers a unique view of the Rio Tejo. After having strolled through the complex fabric small narrow streets of Alfama, arriving near the museum of decorative arts, one discovers that unique public space, urban real developer. Place of rest and contemplation, obligatory stopping in the middle of the bustling city, this "urban gap" offers respite to those who deserved a chance to find out. It is actually a car park built into the hillside, the roof was converted into public space. Designed with simplicity, this platform above the old town just underlines the horizon and marks its presence in the only white marble used. Only by measuring the place, by traversing the ramps, we discover with surprise that this is a car park. I must say I was really seduced by the idea of using the top of such equipment to create a silence in the city. Continuing our visit, we spotted a cafe terrace in which trade is actually below the first terrace ... well, I confess to have benefited, without once having to antispiritualiste booed these jobbers or mogul reached. Times change ...
Finally, I was really seduced by the use of authentic materials, simple lines and efficient service elegant architecture that I invite you to browse my gallery of photos. Even the owner of the bar had used the term "concrete block" to describe this marvelous architectural project; I will return.

How To Clean Lily Padz

THPE - Leibar & João Luís Carrilho Seigneurin

following a recent operation of public housing high performance energy Bègles signed Leibar and Seigneurin. It is a building housing R +4, whose apartments are all traversing east / west. To ensure performance "THPE" The building is made entirely of poured concrete, a material with high thermal inertia. Clean site, construction accurate.
east side corridors are lined with pots of flowers, painted white. Not really local style, but the writing is neat. West side, the balconies have a double skin glass panel mobile, allowing the summer to open balconies, and winter to store heat.
Without being the most original operation (the architecture should it be original?), These units have the advantage of being well designed and properly conducted. Small details of separation, or processing angle of cantilever reinforced this impression. Like what, architecture Labelled can still surprise us! I will refrain, however, discuss the background and neighboring operations, they border on ridiculous and carry high the banner of abjection.

da Graça-Archaeological Museum

During a trip to the summit of the highest hill of Lisbon, near the castle Soa Jorge, I was fortunate to discover a recent work of Portuguese architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça, the Archaeological Museum. Invested for nearly 400 years by the Moors, the site boasts a remarkable view over the city and the Tagus River. This archaeological area representing approximately 300 square meters, includes a prehistoric ruins of two houses Islamic XI and XII century and the remains of the palace of Santiago Accounts XV and XVII century. This place remains an area of excavation and study, where there are regular visits or general themes, led by archaeologists.
After visiting the castle lookout Soa Jorge, taking the height on the walls, balcony accessed by the whole archaeological site with the Tagus River in the background. In the midst of a beautiful pine vegetation, the appearance is mind-blowing! Two small white houses with patios seem to float above the stone ruins in the middle of a rusty steel pens. To protect the site while conducting a guided tour, Carrilho Graca has indeed surrounded the area of Corten steel. Between the warm yellow stone and sand, the back alley between the pristine white houses and red-orange product Corten any sensible person, an emotion that is difficult to suffocate!

Continued parcours_ Descending steel seems to naturally return to form small structures that house the excavated areas most susceptible. But more surprising are the white volumes. Perfectly straight roof, they float above the ruins and offer a cutting height of each net to the stone. What dialogue!
Technically you will understand, the white walls are actually made of painted sheet metal, suspended by a truss structure. The points of support, few are willing with talent, often invisible, never in the corners. The effect of separation is perfect. The choice of this writing to represent the volume of what were once two houses Islamic, is truly impeccable. Accuracy is here light of obedience to the truth of the place. Because the architecture is the art that can best recall the Nature ... I invite you to plunge into the heart of a ride for the senses.
